"Lowlands Away" is a traditional Anglo-Scottish tune that exists in multiple versions, as both a ballad and a shanty. In this its ballad form the narrator mourns the death of the woman left behind by her beau. Note: John" was a slang term for a sailor, used to describe a ship's deckhands. And shanties often have a call and response structure, this allowed one sailor to set the rhythm of work for the others.
