Editorial choices for the viola version of Brahms Sonata, Op. 120 No. 2, edited by Lawrence Wheeler. Research sources are the N. Simrock first edition (1894) and G. Henle Verlag edition Johannes Brahms New Edition of All Works Neue Ausgabe sämtlicher Werke (2010). A viola transcription by Brahms was published in 1895, but had many interpolations for technical simplification. In this edition, octave placements follow the original clarinet part (except where noted). Dynamics in parentheses match the piano score. Care was given to the placement of hairpins. Phrasings are maintained, but with practical bowings for the viola. Suggested fingerings are given, with alternate choices in parentheses. For reference, all editorial decisions are shown in the research pages.
