http://www.matthewnunesmusic.com/arrangements.htmlThe Elephant is the fifth movement in Camille Saint-Saens 1886 suite The Carnival of the Animals and originally features the double bass. A quirky and imaginative piece, the Carnival features the representations of lions and swans, assortments of fowl, aquatic wonders, and even fossils. The Elephant is based on two themes, the Scherzo from A Midsummer Nights Dream by Felix Mendelssohn and Dance of the Sylphs from The Damnation of Faust by Hector Berlioz. There are plenty of jokes in the Carnival, and no doubt audiences at the time chuckled when hearing familiar themes in a much lower presentation.
