This song, The Single Petal of a Rose, was among the most beautiful and personal melodies Ellington ever wrote. It was the centerpiece of The Queens Suite, six songs he and his collaborator Billy Strayhorn composed for Queen Elizabeth II in 1958. Five of the six songs represent different musical landscapesa grove full of fireflies, or a mockingbird singing at sunsetseen by Ellington in his travels around the world. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We simplified the right-hand and left-hand parts so that someone of average skill can play them and sound great doing so. We hope you like what we've done to make the arrangement of this classic Ellington tune unique!
