Introduction and Allegro for Trombone and PianoThe piece starts with a slow melody in the trombone over held chords in the piano. The Allegro starts abruptly with the trombone playing a running, detached melody which contains the three musical ideas used in the section. This opening is accompanied by an ostinato figure in the piano. It is then developed in seqments until a moment of calm which preceeds the concluding return of the main theme.
