Friedrich Schiller wrote the poem Ode to Joy in 1785 as a celebration of the triumph of the brotherhood of man against war and desperation. A revised version was published in 1808. In 1824 Ludwig van Beethoven used parts of that poem in his Ninth Symphony. In 1907 Henry van Dyke added his choice of words to Beethovens melody to create the hymn Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee. Ode to Joy became the Anthem of the Council of Europe in 1972 and in 1985 the anthem of the European Community (EU). Ode to Joy is commonly used as a Wedding Recessional.
