This piece is for 4 pitched percussion instruments. The current arrangement is for a single timpani, a tuned tom-tom, a vibraphone, and a xylophone. Any 4 instruments may be used in a performance. The model for the piece is ecstatic ritual drumming, and the pitches are chosen from the ratios of hammer weights described in Boetheus's tale of how Pythagorus stumbled upon the ratios of concord. The beat patterns are based upon numbers taken from a 4x4 magic square as shown in Durer's Melancholia. The original title for the piece was "Pythagorean Hammers in a Magic Square," but that's a little pretentious, so I changed the title to something better. The trick to the piece is to approximate loudness from different percussion instruments so that they blend well. The pitches are the pythagorean ratios of concord in the key of F, which is why a C clef was chosen for the score and parts.
