The melodies of Innocente ma Curioso (Italian for "innocent but curious") slowly awaken and unfold, overlapping and weaving as they get to know each other, finally coming together in shared exuberance. Lydian inflections, playful pizzicato, and triangle give a sense of timidity that evolves into wonder. The narrative of the piece, which, while evoked in the title, is not prescribed by the composer, and can be played with by the conductor as they experiment with the fermatas, piu mossos, and ritards. With strong programmatic influence, this piece would work well on a concert on the themes of curiosity, beauty, and joy, or even accompanying an art show or theatrical performances.
This full orchestra piece runs at just under five minutes, and is perfect for advanced high school, college, and community orchestras, especially those with strong upper wind sections. Creative musicians will enjoy the challenge of phrasing and shaping the melodies to bring out their personalities.
