This arrangement of takes a German Christmas song and sets it to choir with piano and organ accompaniment. The words of the first two verses are John Troutback's translation of Johann Rist's original words. The harmonization utilizes J.S. Bach's arrangement of the piece from the 1734 Christmas Oratorio. The third verse is added by Zachary Damm. The thematic progression of the verses leads the listener from verse one, in which the shepherds are approached and advised by the angels concerning the mission of the newly-born Christ child, to verse two, in which His divine human nature is viewed as dispelling night, to verse three, in which the relevance of that same Christ relates to the Christian's confidence of victory over death. The vocal parts are purposely kept simple, mostly in unison, in order to underscore the verbal message. The instrumentation of the piano and organ lend sufficient support to the voices, elegantly embellishing the theme, until all stops are let loose on the last verse. Enjoy presenting this piece to your choir this Christmas season and many more to come!
