Bartok's Romanian Dances were originally written for piano. He later arranged them himself for a small ensemble. The version usually heard today, however, is the one by Zoltan Szekely, who transcribed them for violin and piano. The current arrangement is based on Szekelys version.
Bela Bartok was a keen collector and researcher of Romanian and Hungarian folk music, and came across these tunes on his expeditions to uncover the folk music of Transylvania. They were probably played on a violin or a folk-style shepherd's flute - which makes them very suitable for the recorder, either a soprano (in one case, a sopranino), or an alto.
The recorder part of this arrangement can also be played on a flute / piccolo flute.
