Will Ye Go to the Indies: As a young man Scotlands great poet, Robert Burns, fell in love with a girl he called Highland Mary, and persuaded her to emigrate with him to the West Indies. In the text of this song we hear the poem he wrote about those huge decisions. Tragically, Mary died before they could start their life together. Many years later, in 1792, Burns set the poem to an old Scottish folk song. To his publisher he explained: You must know, that all my earlier love-songs were the breathings of ardent Passion; and tho it might have been easy in aftertimes to have given them a polish, yet that polish would have defaced the legend of my heart.
