Modest Mussorgsky composed "Pictures at an Exhibition" in honor of his friend and painter, Viktor Hartmann.
Each of the movements of Pictures attempts to capture the sketches, watercolors and architectural designs displayed at the Hartmann exhibition. Mussorgsky depicts himself moving from one picture to the next with a musical "Promenade".
Open your concert with this piece and your audience won't forget it. Hear the large brass sound of the original version through flute and piano in their strongest registers.
