Piano Sonata No. 15 in D major, Op. 28, published in 1801, was named Pastoral or Pastorale by Beethoven's publisher at the time, A. Cranz. The sonata it is admired for the intricacy and technicality in the ease it portrays. It is dedicated to the Count Joseph von Sonnenfels and takes approximately 25 minutes to play.
It has been speculated whether the title refers to the sense of countryside and nature (like Symphony 6), or to its sense of calm, simplicity and lightness. In any case, the use of winds in this arrangement helpts to emphasise the general pastoral feeling of the work.
