This piece for Piano Quintet evokes several feeling before it's ending. It depicts a tumultuous storm with a melody that begins simply minor, and grows into a flurry of confusion by the end of the first section. The middle section is much calmer, with slow and methodical excerpts derived from the first section and some new material, depicting the eye of the storm. Finally, the third section features a return to the beginning, albeit heavily reharmonized. The piece makes use of several keys, as well as some more complex scales. For example, near the end of the first section, the piano part features the octatonic scale, otherwise known as the diminished scale. The piece is tricky at times, and particularly challenges an ensembles ability to stay together in the transition to the third and final section, but is rewarding to the players who weather the storm with a truly evocative and gripping experience.
