Johanna Müller-Hermann (1868-1941) was born in Vienna and after several years as a primary school teacher returned to music studying with a number of teachers including Alexander von Zemlinsky and Josef Foerster. As a composer she wrote a large number of chamber, vocal and orchestral works and enjoyed much success during her lifetime. She became a professor of music theory at the New Vienna Conservatory in 1918 and much of her music was published by Universal Edition and Musikhaus Doblinger.
Im Garten des Serails is the second piece from Müller-Hermanns Zwei Frauenchöre mit orchester, Op. 10. It sets a German translation of a poem by the Danish writer Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885) and was first published by Universal Edition in 1915.
