Born in 1873, Ethel Barns studied at the Watford School of Music and later at the Royal Academy of Music in London before becoming well known as a violinist-composer in the early 1900s. During her career Barns composed over 120 works comprising orchestral, chamber and vocal music; she was one of the most important female composers of the early twentieth century and to date her music has been performed at the Proms twenty times.
Danse Caractéristique is a short virtuosic work for violin and piano idea as a recital work or encore for high level student and professional performers. The work was originally published in 1907.
